Incheon Airport to Hongdae: How to Get There (AREX Direct)

I landed at Incheon at 6 a.m., opened Google Maps, typed my Hongdae hostel — and the walking directions button just... didn't work. Standing there with two suitcases, I learned Korea's first travel lesson the hard way.

Here's the good news I wish someone had told me on the plane: if you're staying in Hongdae, you have the single easiest airport route in all of Seoul. One train. Zero transfers. It drops you in the middle of the neighborhood.

The catch — and it trips up travelers every single day — is that

the faster, more expensive Express train does NOT stop at Hongdae

Take the AREX All-Stop Train (blue signs) from the airport's B1 level straight to Hongik University Station. About 53 minutes from Terminal 1, roughly ₩5,000 (~$3.60) with a T-money card. Do not board the orange Express train — it skips Hongdae entirely and costs ₩13,000.

※ All-stop fare varies slightly by terminal (max ₩5,350). Bus 6002 also passes Hongdae, but it's slower than the train and costs more — skip it unless the trains have stopped for the night.

⚠️ Blue Gates, Not Orange

At the airport's B1 train level there are two sets of ticket gates: blue = All-Stop (what you want, works with T-money), orange = Express (separate ticket, does not stop at Hongdae). Tired travelers tap into the orange gates every day and end up at Seoul Station, backtracking two stops. Also note: last trains leave around 23:30 — land later than that and it's taxi time.

From the moment you clear customs, this takes about 70 minutes door to door.

Buy a T-money card first

Grab one at any convenience store (CU/GS25) in arrivals, load ₩10,000. It works on every subway, bus and most taxis nationwide — you'll use it all trip.

Follow "Airport Railroad" signs down to B1

Tap through the blue All-Stop gates. Trains run roughly every 10–15 minutes from about 5:20 a.m. to 23:30.

Get off at Hongik University Station — Exit 9

Ride to the end of the airport stretch — Hongik Univ. is 2 stops before Seoul Station. Exit 9 puts you on Hongdae's main drag; Exit 3 is for the Yeonnam-dong / "Yeontral Park" side.

One More Thing: Google Maps Won't Walk You There

Because of Korean map-data export rules,

Google Maps cannot give walking or driving directions in Korea

— it only shows places and transit lines. For the last 400 meters from Exit 9 to your guesthouse, you need a local app. Download Naver Map before you land: it's free, and if your phone's language is English, the app runs in English automatically. Search your hotel name, tap the walk icon, done. (Kakao Map works great too — pick one, you don't need both.)
