AREX Express vs all-stop: what actually differs

Both trains leave from the same platforms at Incheon Airport and end at Seoul Station. The Express skips everything in between. It reaches Terminal 1 in 43 minutes from Seoul Station and Terminal 2 in 51 minutes. Those two numbers are the only journey times AREX publishes. The all-stop train calls at every station on the line, and AREX does not publish a single figure for it. If the timing matters to your flight, read the departure board at the station rather than trusting a number you found online. The fare gap is the part you can rely on. A T-money or Cashbee card works on the all-stop train and nothing else. The Express needs its own ticket, bought online, at a machine, or at an AREX service centre. The service centres sit on basement level 2 at Seoul Station and on basement level 1 of the transportation centre at both airport terminals. Tapping a transit card at an Express gate will simply not work.

Do you have heavy luggage?

Every Express passenger gets a reserved seat. The all-stop train fills with commuters and you may stand the whole way.

Are you flying out the same day?

Only Express ticket holders may use the check-in terminal at Seoul Station. That alone can be worth the fare.

Is your stop on the way?

The Express only stops at Seoul Station. For Hongdae, Gongdeok or DMC, the all-stop train is both cheaper and faster.

Why the Express costs what it costs

The 13,000 won is already a discounted figure. AREX lists the standard fare as 18,500 won from Seoul Station to Terminal 1 and 19,100 won to Terminal 2, and sells the seat at 13,000 won. Children aged 6 to under 13 pay 9,500 won, and so do a few other groups: Korean nationals aged 65 and over with ID, passengers with a disability card, and holders of a national merit certificate. . On a morning with a flight to catch, that is a different product from a cheap ride. The timetable is worth knowing before you decide. The first Express leaves Terminal 2 at 05:16 and Terminal 1 at 05:24, reaching Seoul Station at 06:07. The last one departs Terminal 2 at 22:40 and Terminal 1 at 22:48, arriving at 23:31. Going the other way, the first train leaves Seoul Station at 06:00 and the last at 23:00. Weekday and weekend timetables are identical, which is unusual for Korean rail and makes planning simpler. Land after 23:00 and the Express is gone for the night, so the all-stop train becomes your only rail option. Payment is rarely a problem. AREX accepts Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners Club, American Express and UnionPay, along with Alipay and WeChat Pay for travellers who already use them at home. One more thing that is easy to miss: some Korean credit cards include a free Express ticket as a benefit, but that benefit is only handed out at the AREX service centres, not at the City Airport Terminal desk. If someone in your group holds one of those cards, walk to the service centre first.
